History

Polson, Montana is part of the region that was once occupied in the early 19th century by the Indian tribes Salish and the Pend d’Oreilles and one band of the Kootenai Tribe. In the 1820s, non-Indian fur-traders visited the area. The first ferry across the lower Flathead River at present-day Polson was operated by French-Canadian Abraham Finley in 1840. Non-Indians started settling in the valleys following a Presidential Proclamation that opened “surplus” reservation lands to settlement in 1910. The city transitioned from a regional commercial and trade center to a resort community during the latter half of the 20th century.

They say that the future of a nation lies in its youth. The U.S. Department of Education believes in this so much so that they regularly fund grants. Polson and Ronan school districts in Montana recently received grant funding of $225,000 each which is aimed at advancing student literacy skills. The grant is also focused on disadvantaged children as part of the Montana Comprehensive Literacy State Development Project. In the succeeding year, the two districts will be eligible to receive $450,000 each. This will ensure that the school children are equipped with the knowledge and skills that they need to make the country progressive and productive in the years to come.
